Porsche's Secure Gateway is a hardware firewall built into the vehicle's central gateway module. Introduced across the range from model year 2021, it prevents any diagnostic tool from communicating with the vehicle's control units unless the tool is authenticated online through Porsche's servers. This has significant implications for independent workshops, mobile mechanics, and DIY owners. Nine Torque has full Secure Gateway access.
The Secure Gateway module sits between the OBD2 port and the vehicle's internal CAN bus networks. When a diagnostic tool connects, the gateway requires an online authentication handshake with Porsche's central server before allowing any communication beyond basic OBD2 emissions data. Without this authentication, you cannot read manufacturer-specific fault codes, perform active tests, code components, program keys, update software, or perform any function that requires write access to a control unit. Generic OBD2 scanners are blocked entirely from manufacturer-specific protocols. Even PIWIS III requires an active internet connection and valid Porsche PPN account to authenticate. This is Porsche's response to increasing cybersecurity requirements and the European UNECE R155 regulation on vehicle cyber security.
A 2022 992 Carrera had a check engine light following a battery disconnection during routine maintenance. The owner's local independent garage connected their Autel MaxiSys — a tool that normally provides reasonable Porsche coverage on pre-2021 models. The Secure Gateway blocked all communication beyond basic OBD2. The garage could not read the manufacturer-specific fault codes, could not clear them, and could not perform the battery registration procedure required after a battery disconnect. The owner brought the car to us. We authenticated via PIWIS III, cleared 12 fault codes across 6 modules (all triggered by the voltage interruption), performed the battery registration, and reset the power management system. The entire process took 45 minutes.
A 2022 Macan GTS owner lost one of their two keys. They contacted a mobile auto locksmith who advertised Porsche key programming. The locksmith arrived, connected to the OBD port, and was immediately blocked by the Secure Gateway. Porsche key programming on post-2021 vehicles requires PIWIS III with online Secure Gateway authentication, plus access to Porsche's POAS (Porsche Online Authentication System) for immobiliser functions. We programmed a new replacement key, deleted the lost key from the immobiliser system, and provided the owner with updated key documentation. Without Secure Gateway access, this job simply cannot be done outside of a Porsche Centre or an equipped independent specialist.
A 2023 Cayenne had an intermittent adaptive damper fault. PIWIS III diagnosis identified the issue as a known software bug in the PASM control unit — Porsche had issued a technical service bulletin with a software update. Applying the update required Secure Gateway authentication, PIWIS III with the latest software subscription, and a stable internet connection throughout the flashing process. We applied the update, which took approximately 25 minutes. The fault has not returned. No independent garage without Secure Gateway access and current PIWIS software could have performed this repair — the only alternative would have been a Porsche Centre at main dealer rates.
The Secure Gateway represents a fundamental shift in how Porsche vehicles can be serviced. For owners of post-2021 vehicles, choosing an independent workshop now requires verifying that the workshop has legitimate PIWIS III access with a current Porsche PPN subscription.
At Nine Torque, we maintain an active Porsche PPN subscription with full Secure Gateway authentication capability. This means we can perform every diagnostic and programming function available at a Porsche Centre — fault code reading and clearing, active component testing, module coding, key programming, software updates, and online calibration procedures — at independent workshop rates.
This investment in factory-level tooling is central to our approach. We do not offer a reduced-capability service. If a job requires Secure Gateway access, we have it. If it requires a software update from Porsche's servers, we can apply it. If you own a post-2021 Porsche and need specialist servicing outside the main dealer network, contact us.
All Porsche models from model year 2021 onwards: 992 (911), 9J1 (Cayenne facelift), 95B.2 (Macan facelift), 971.2 (Panamera), and all Taycan models. Some late-2020 production vehicles may also have it depending on build date. Pre-2021 models are not affected and can be diagnosed with PIWIS III without online authentication.
You can read basic OBD2 emissions data (engine fault codes, live data streams mandated by emissions legislation). You cannot access any manufacturer-specific system: PDK transmission, PDCC suspension, PSM stability, airbag, comfort modules, lighting, or body electronics. For most diagnostic purposes, the generic scanner is effectively useless on these vehicles.
An oil change itself does not require diagnostic access. However, resetting the service indicator, performing the oil level calibration on models with electronic dipsticks, and resetting the inspection interval counters all require PIWIS III with Secure Gateway authentication. So while you can physically change the oil, you cannot properly complete the service without the correct tools.
No. The immobiliser prevents the engine from starting without a matched key. The Secure Gateway prevents diagnostic tools from communicating with the vehicle's control units without online authentication. They are separate systems, though both contribute to the vehicle's overall security architecture. Key programming requires passing through both security layers.
Some manufacturers (Autel, Launch) have agreements with certain vehicle brands for limited Secure Gateway access, but Porsche has not opened its Secure Gateway to any third-party tool manufacturer as of early 2025. The only way to obtain full Secure Gateway access for Porsche vehicles is through an active Porsche PPN subscription linked to PIWIS III hardware. This situation may change under future EU right-to-repair legislation, but no timeline has been confirmed.
